As you begin to work on your lines here are some hints for performing Shakespeare's verse. (If you only speak prose look to communicate clear meaning to the audience.

  • Follow punctuation not printing.

  • Work out the words that should be stressed in order for the meaning of the line to best be understood by the audience

  • Play with the words don't just say them. Look to say the word in a way that reflects the meaning of the word. ie: say disgusting so that it sounds disgusting

  • If your lines contain a list the delivery of this list should build. The stress, volume or pitch of each item in the list should either move up or move down.

  • Don't forget that you are not reciting a poem (even though you are) you are conversing with other characters and/or the audience. Natural speech is varied in its delivery. (Listen to people having a lively conversation.) Look for vocal variety in rate, volume, pitch and tone. For example, are you engaged in thinking? Your rate may slow as you think about your word choice. Are you in a hurry? Your rate may increase as you take action.

1/3/26

As you know we will not be on the stage until after 1/25. But I am giving you a heads up on some things you will need as we begin blocking and running.

Running in scenes wearing sneakers etc. is not recommended if you will be wearing something different during the show.

4 Lovers: You folks will be running around a lot and you will be wearing sandals. You'll need a pair that has a heel strap so you don't trip. The sooner you begin rehearsing in them the better.

Athenians:  You also need sandals, but you won't be running around.

Fairies:  Since all fairies will be dancing and it should look like you are barefoot, you will need half sole lyrical dance shoes.  You can get them at Amazon (MIKIBANA Women's Girls Half Sole Dance Shoes Lyrical Bare Foot https://a.co/d/du0F7L7).

Likewise some characters will not be wearing typical casual wear.

The Girls (Hermia and Helena):  Your costumes will be long. If you have an ankle length skirt try and find it to use as a rehearsal skirt. If you don't have one let me know and I'll look in costume storage.

Fairies:  For rehearsals you'll need to wear clothing that does not constrict movement.
